North Western Railway came into effect on 1st October, 2002. It was carved out of 2 divisions each from Northern and Western Railways. The formation of this zone along with five other new zones was first approved by Railway Board on 16th September, 1996 and foundation stone for this zone was laid on 17th October 1996 by the then Prime Minister Shri H.D. Deve Gowda at K.P. Singh Stadium, Jaipur.

North Western Railway (NWR) publishing their supply and works tenders through IREPS (Indian Railways e-Procurement System) portal. Supply Tenders (Goods and Services) are being published by Stores Department, Engineering Department, Medical Department, Depot and Divisions of North Western Railway (NWR).

Works tenders are being published by Engineering Department, Electrical Department, Mechanical Department and Signaling & Telecom Department of North Western Railway (NWR).

Vendors registered on IREPS portal can participate online in the tenders published through IREPS portal i.e. they can see and download the tender document, submit their financial bids online and after the opening of the tender, they can see the comparative statements also. Store, Engineering, Medical, Electrical, Mechanical, Signaling & Telecom Department tenders of North Western Railway (NWR) are being published through IREPS portal but tenders of other departments of North Western Railway (NWR) are being published on their own website and for these tenders, vendors have to submit offline bids.
